Automation Engineer
About the Role
As an Automation Engineer, you will ensure the reliability, performance, and compliance of automation systems supporting manufacturing and packaging operations. You will perform advanced troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and continuous improvement activities for PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems while ensuring minimal disruption to production in a GMP-regulated environment.
You will serve as the automation expert within the maintenance team, working closely with production, engineering, IT, and external vendors to maintain and optimize automated manufacturing systems.

Key Responsibilities

Automation Maintenance & Support

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on automation systems (ISA Levels 1–3).
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex automation issues to minimize production downtime.
  • Execute routine automation activities such as backups, restores, audit trail reviews, and system access management.
  • Support system patching activities in collaboration with Digital Technology & Innovation (DTI).
  • Establish secure remote vendor connections and coordinate technical support with equipment suppliers.

Technical Leadership

  • Act as the first point of escalation for automation-related issues.
  • Coach and train maintenance technicians on automation systems and best practices.
  • Develop technical documentation, work instructions, and training materials.
  • Support engineering projects and equipment implementations as the automation specialist.

Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor and optimize automation system performance within the packaging environment.
  • Identify and implement improvements to increase equipment reliability, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are accurately documented and performed in accordance with GMP, company procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain strong collaboration with production, engineering, and other stakeholders to deliver high levels of operational support.

Qualifications

  • MBO+ or Bachelor’s degree in Automation, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a GMP-regulated manufacturing or packaging environment with a strong focus on automation.
  • Hands-on experience with PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems, including maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of computerized maintenance and regulatory compliance within GMP environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
  • Willingness to work in a 3 and 5 shift-based environment and provide occasional off-hours support.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in automation platforms such as Siemens or Rockwell.
  • Experience with GMP compliance or maintenance reliability programs (e.g. ISA, CMRT).
  • Experience coaching technicians and delivering technical training.
  • Proven experience leading automation improvements and supporting equipment optimization projects.
