What does a Medical Affairs Manager do?

As a Medical Affairs Manager within Medical Affairs, you are a natural leader. You lead from the front as a recognised expert. Together with your scientific and clinical knowledge, you apply this to your extensive professional relationships whether this is with external stakeholders or your own team. External relationships can range from key opinion leaders to various industry organisations, where you represent your company as a senior medical representative. You are seen as the expert in the field and also promote your company as being responsible and ethically sound. Internally, you help to develop the company’s strategy and convert this into an appropriate operational plan, in accordance with company and regulatory guidelines. You provide medical consultancy within the company, manage projects and ensure compliance with all codes of practice, regulations and other guidelines.

What tasks and responsibilities can you expect as a Medical Affairs Manager?

The tasks and responsibilities of a Medical Affairs Manager will vary according to the position being offered, and the type of organisation. They are likely to include some or all of the following:

  • checking that all processes are correctly documented and updated;
  • verifying that projects and tasks are conducted according to good clinical practice (GCP), standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other compliance standards;
  • ensuring that all output complies with the European Medicines Evaluation Agency (EMEA) regulations, Dutch codes of practice and license conditions where necessary;
  • overseeing medical premarket approval of new chemical entities (NCEs);
  • identifying study-related regulatory and quality issues, and managing complaints and any subsequent legal actions;
  • designing and implementing campaigns such as those for disease awareness and medical education, depending on the organisation’s products;
  • participating in meetings with senior management and attending external meetings and congresses on behalf of the company;
  • developing the best possible working relationships between the organisation and stakeholders, especially key opinion leaders;
  • leading, coaching and motivating your team including appropriate development plans.

What education and skills do you need as a Medical Affairs Manager?

Your education will be based on a relevant PhD or MD qualification. In either case, you will need to demonstrate many years of experience within medical affairs. A background in commercial/medical roles in the pharmaceutical industry is also essential, for example in product launches or off-patent issues. Practical knowledge of regulatory affairs, quality assurance or pharmacovigilance will also stand you in good stead.

Candidates are preferred who have proven qualities as follows:

  • a strong, motivational leader, with experience leading a multi-level team;
  • a proactive visionary and confident influencer;
  • energetic and outgoing, ‘seizes the moment’.

What salary can you expect as a Medical Affairs Manager?

The salary for a Medical Affairs Manager in the Netherlands depends on background and experience. It is usually in the range €100.000,- – €150.000,- per annum plus bonus, and often a lease car is provided.
