The role and responsibilities of a Sales Manager vary according to the size and structure of a company, the therapeutic areas covered and whether marketing is included. Overall, the role encompasses three main areas: drawing up sales plans (including the budget) to achieve the company objectives; developing the sales team; and analyzing and monitoring the market, trends and developments in time to act swiftly to optimize commercial success.

Typical responsibilities may include:

  • Drawing up and implementing/monitoring plans and budgets;
  • Developing and leading the sales team so they perform at their best;
  • Collaborating with other departments to match resources with commercial objectives;
  • Identifying opportunities and threats, and taking appropriate action;
  • Issuing reports and analyses, including recommendations, to the relevant stakeholders.

What education and skills do you need as a Sales Manager?

You will already have the necessary educational qualifications in your current role. You will also have extensive experience in sales in the pharmaceutical industry and be able to demonstrate an impressive record in sales results and new product launches. You will also need an in-depth knowledge of the healthcare system in the Netherlands, including familiarity with the CGR code of conduct.

As well as this, you need certain key skills and personal attributes:

  • Excellent verbal and written communications;
  • The ability to coach teams and individuals effectively;
  • Proven expertise in strategy and vision, and an entrepreneurial outlook;
  • A driven and decisive personality, proactive with strong leadership skills.

What salary can you expect as a Sales Manager?

The salary for a Sales Manager will depend on a number of factors such as the type and size of organization, your background and experience, and the seniority of the role on offer. As a guide, in the Netherlands you can expect a salary of between €75.000,- and €120.000,- plus bonus, and a lease car.
