What does a Process Operator do?

Being a Process Operator within Operations & Maintenance means that you are ensuring the smooth running of a production process, which in the pharma industry is typically the same as in most manufacturing industries; hazardous substances may also be involved. Your technical knowledge of how production lines work, and what specific operational procedures are set out, are applied to running the production line and you can fix minor technical issues yourself. The production line is often partly or fully computerised, but you are constantly monitoring it and it is essential that you know how to react quickly, and know what immediate steps to take, if an issue arises. Your knowledge of how the production line works means that whatever intervention is needed if a problem arises – making adjustments, stopping the line to effect a repair or replace a part, while possibly diverting the process so it can continue in a temporary set-up – you can do this immediately so production is back on track as soon as possible.

What roles and responsibilities can you expect as a Process Operator?

Your primary role as a Process Operator is to ensure the quantity, quality and safety of the production process. You are most likely to work as part of a production team including other Process Operators and work in shifts, so worker safety is paramount.
Other responsibilities may include:

• Ensuring there is adequate supervision and monitoring of the production process;
• Ensuring the optimum efficiency and continuation of the production process;
• Identifying and applying small improvements to the process.

What education and skills do you need as a Process Operator?

Educational requirements are usually MLO Level 3 diploma, and relevant technical training is essential, which may be possible to undertake while you are working as some courses are online. Examples of such training are:

• Vocational education (MBO) in VAPRO A, B and C Process Operator
• VCA-VOL Basic Process (safety);
• GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices).

You also need to be able to work well in a team.

What salary can you expect as a Process Operator?

The salary for a Process Operator will depend on a number of factors such as the type and size of the production facility, your experience and the seniority of the role on offer. As a guide, you can expect a salary of between €2.600 and €4.500,- per month in the Netherlands plus a shift allowance.
