What does a Planner do?

A Planner within Operations & Maintenance in a manufacturing facility is usually an all-rounder who coordinates with team leaders from production, sales, purchasing, quality and technical departments to make sure that the production process is as efficient as possible. This key role needs you to be results-driven and have exceptional organisational skills along with the ability to problem-solve effectively and promptly, to minimise disruption to the production process. As well as planning production and monitoring it closely, you may also supervise the production of new products to see whether any aspects of this, and existing processes, can be optimised.

What roles and responsibilities can you expect as a Planner?

Your roles and responsibilities as a Planner centre around planning production schedules and tasks according to customer orders, to plan production for optimal delivery. This includes any priorities being taken into account and ensuring that the final product complies with the customer’s order and the relevant quality standards and company policies.

In detail, your responsibilities may include the following:

  • Planning the resources necessary for production (equipment, material and manpower) and ordering materials and other supplies for delivery on time;
  • Exercising strict inventory management to avoid shortages, and therefore delays in production, but also avoiding costly excesses;
  • Drawing up formal plans and monitoring them against production progress regularly, sharing these in meetings with the production manager and other key personnel;
  • Identifying potential problems and investigating production issues causing delays and interruptions;
  • Contributing to solutions along with other team members, and adjusting the production schedule if necessary to reflect this.

What education and skills do you need as a Planner?

You will need to demonstrate completion of specific and relevant qualifications and training including some of the following:

  • MBO Logistics;
  • HBO Logistics;
  • HBO CE MER;
  • VCA-VOL (safety);
  • GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices).

You will also need certain personal attributes, such as being customer-oriented, showing initiative and having a thorough and thoughtful approach to the work. You will be expected to work well as part of a team and have great communication and IT skills, and be comfortable with shift work.

What salary can you expect as a Planner?

The salary for a Planner will depend on the type and size of organization, your qualifications and experience, and the seniority of the role on offer. As a guide, you can expect a salary of between €3.500,- and €5.000,- per month plus shift allowance in the Netherlands.
