What does a Production Manager do?

Being a Production Manager within Operations & Maintenance you have a wide remit in supervising the manufacturing processes, using your extensive knowledge of the area. This covers such aspects as capacity management, quality, costs, personnel, safety, logistics and maintenance, ensuring that the processes are running efficiently and are safe. Your specific technical expertise may be called on when necessary, for example in the design and controls of the production systems. As production needs to be completed on time and within budget, you are also using your skills in related areas such as ICT, administration and planning.

What roles and responsibilities can you expect as a Production Manager?

The roles and responsibilities of a Production Manager are many and varied. They will differ between companies, but in summary they are likely to include the following:

  • Planning and organizing production schedules;
  • Determine the resources that will be required and when these will be needed to meet the project timetable;
  • Agreeing the quality control standards the process must meet;
  • Check that the manufacturing process meets all quality standards and health and safety regulations;
  • Monitoring productivity and improving this where necessary;
  • Organizing the repair or replacement of damaged or faulty equipment;
  • Collecting data and producing reports;
  • Liaising with other departments and supervising the team members.

What education and skills do you need as a Production Manager?

You will need to demonstrate completion of specific and relevant qualifications and training such as the following:

  • HBO Chemical Technology;
  • HBO Business Administration;
  • WO Chemical Engineering;
  • VCA-VOL (safety);
  • GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices);
  • Completion of relevant ROVC training courses.

Required skills include project management, good organization and planning, and IT knowledge in the relevant applications. Experience with production planning and data analysis tools is a must.

You will also need key personal attributes: for example to be customer-oriented with a goal-oriented mindset, show initiative, be confident and resilient to working under pressure, yet maintain a scrupulous and thoughtful approach to the work. You will be expected to work well both as a leader and as part of a team, including consideration for team members’ safety and professional development, and have excellent communication skills.

What salary can you expect as a Production Manager?

The salary for a Production Manager will depend on the type and size of organization, your qualifications and experience, and the seniority of the role on offer. As a guide, you can expect a salary of between €5.000,- and €7.500,- per month in the Netherlands.
