What does a Key Account Manager do?

A Key Account Manager within Sales is a natural step up if you are already an experienced Account Manager or Product Specialist. Are you ready for this ‘key’ role? As a Key Account Manager you are responsible for implementing the agreed strategy for your accounts to achieve the commercial objectives, delivered in your designated geographical area. This customer-facing role brings you into regular contact with your accounts and stakeholders, through multi-channel activities such as face-to-face or online meetings. You not only work in your own therapeutic areas, but work with other, cross-function teams that are involved in your accounts. You therefore use your excellent communication and networking skills, and understand the most effective way to approach targets and accounts, to create the right impact on the decision making units (DMUs). What roles and responsibilities can you expect as a Key Account Manager?

Your roles and responsibilities as a Key Account Manager are divided between strategic planning and account development (e.g. implementing brand strategy and maintaining a cross-function approach to accounts), and operational responsibilities.

Examples of operational responsibilities are:

  • Visiting key stakeholders and DMUs, and organizing meetings and other activities;
  • Networking to increase access and maintain close relationships with customers;
  • Analyzing key accounts, identifying customer challenges and opportunities;
  • Developing and maintaining a key account plan.

What education and skills do you need as a Key Account Manager?

You hold at least a bachelor degree in a relevant area (e.g. biomedical, marketing or commercial economics) and have knowledge of relevant laws and regulations. Added to this, you will need:

  • Several years’ experience as an Account Manager or Product Specialist, dealing with medical professionals in the same therapeutic area as the vacancy;
  • A proven solution-oriented approach backed by sound analysis;
  • An excellent track record in proposing effective operational action plans in line with agreed strategy;
  • Strong networking and team player skills.

What salary can you expect as a Key Account Manager?

The salary for a Key Account Manager will depend on the type and size of organization, your qualifications and experience, and the seniority of the role on offer. As a guide, in the Netherlands you can expect a salary of between €60.000,- and €100.000,- per annum plus bonuses, and there is usually a car or car allowance on top.
