What does a buyer do?

As a buyer, you are part of the Procurement department. You are responsible for purchasing products and services for operational purposes as well as for research and development, in compliance with current Dutch and European regulations. You may also contribute to training colleagues in other departments, such as Marketing, Sales, Laboratory, and Manufacturing, on how to meet their purchasing needs and responsibilities. You will negotiate with suppliers, compare quotes, and ensure that everything your organization requires is available on time and within budget. This could range from ordering laboratory supplies for the R&D department to procuring new software for the IT department. You are at the forefront of procurements efforts, directly contributing to the organization’s success and growth.

What are your tasks and responsibilities as a Buyer?

As a Buyer, you are the driving force ensuring the right products and services are procured at a competitive price. The impact of your role resonates throughout the organization, influencing the success of the end product’s commercialization. Your key tasks and responsibilities include:

• Identifying potential suppliers and negotiating prices and terms;
• Assessing what products or services the organization requires;
• Conducting market research to identify new suppliers and their products or services;
• Evaluating suppliers based on quality, price, and delivery speed;
• Drafting and maintaining purchase orders and contracts;
• Managing supplier relationships and resolving any delivery issues;
• Updating procurement records and ensuring accurate inventory management;
• Attending internal meetings to understand the organization’s procurement needs;
• Ensuring supplier invoices are paid on time;
• Monitoring the quality of delivered products and services and ensuring compliance with agreements;
• Contributing to the development of procurement strategies and policies.

What education and skills do you need as a Buyer?

• A completed education at least at MBO level in a related field, such as Procurement, Business Administration, or Economics;
• Excellent negotiation skills;
• A commercial mindset, proactive approach, and ability to spot opportunities;
• Strong analytical skills;
• Numerical aptitude and attention to detail;
• Ability to multitask and handle stress effectively;
• Knowledge of procurement processes and procedures;
• Experience with procurement software and other IT systems;
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in Dutch and English;
• Ability to work independently and make decisions;
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
