Meet the Companies Academic: The next generation of Life Sciences professionals is ready

Inspiring guest speakers at VU on careers and opportunities in the sector

Last week, around 45 master’s students from the Management Policy Analysis and Entrepreneurship in Health & Life Sciences (MPA) program at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam got a unique behind-the-scenes look at the Life Sciences industry. During an interactive session, experienced professionals shared their career journeys, the impact of their work and how a strong CV can make the difference.

Leaders from industry take the stage

The speakers at VU were Robbert van der Valk (Vice President BU AIR Benelux, Chiesi) and Paul Slobbe (Director Market Access & External Affairs, Takeda). They spoke about their career paths and the choices that led them to where they are today, emphasizing the social value of working in Life Sciences: contributing to innovations that genuinely improve people’s health.

They also offered a glimpse into their organizations. For example, Takeda invests billions annually in the development of new medicines and Chiesi support initiatives such as a smoke-free organization. Their message to students was clear: choosing this sector means choosing impact.

The power of a strong CV

Hans Slobbe from Talentmark joined to help students with their CVs, an essential part of any career start. He showed how a recruiter or employer can decide within just nine seconds whether a candidate gets an interview and why a clear, well-structured presentation of your strengths can be decisive.

Hans took time to review CVs one-on-one and provided practical feedback. The session resonated: more than fifteen students queued up to have their CV checked and requests kept coming in the next day via email and LinkedIn.

Enthusiasm and inspiration

Interest in a career in the pharmaceutical industry proved strong. Where only twenty students raised their hands at the start, the number was significantly higher by the end. The mix of inspiring stories and concrete tips made the event a success.
