You can complete a general engineering degree before you decide to specialise, although a degree in chemical, biochemical or process engineering will give you a head start if you have already chosen your area of expertise. Many companies will give preference to candidates with some practical experience, too. Following your entry-level position, you can progress to more senior roles depending on the type of company, and your experience and area-specific further training and education (such as with ISPE). Engineering is a general term that covers many specialisms, and in pharma the most likely opportunities you will find are for mechanical, chemical, biomedical and bioprocess/process engineers. A mechanical engineer may be designing or maintaining machinery, systems or devices making sure they are working properly and safely. A biomedical or bioprocess engineer may work more on the design side of systems and devices. A chemical engineer will be concerned with processes in manufacturing of products such as mixes and compounds.
