What does a Production Supervisor do?

In your position as Production Supervisor withink Operations & Maintenance you are a member of a team that is responsible for all production operators, and you may move across departments to develop your experience. In this dynamic position you and your colleagues are responsible for achieving the weekly targets in the areas of safety, quality, planning and costs for the production lines. You hold a managerial and coordinating role in the manufacturing process, so you are less involved in operating and adjusting machines. In addition to daily management, you are also responsible for operators under your supervision in terms of performance and assessment interviews, sick leave, counselling, coaching and safety matters.

What roles and responsibilities can you expect as a Production Supervisor?

As a Production Supervisor, your role covers both people management and production process management. This starts with the application of the organisation’s internal regulations and quality management systems, and other rules and guidelines including safety. You monitor the weekly production plan and identify any deviations at an early stage so corrective action can be taken to minimize production interruptions.

Typical tasks may include:

  • Coordinating with colleagues to devise good solutions for issues that have arisen;
  • Contributing to the optimization of the production department;
  • Helping to implement total productive maintenance (TPM) in the production facility;
  • Making a personalized training plan for each team member;
  • Avoiding unsafe actions or behavior through communications with team members.

What education and skills do you need as a Production Supervisor?

You will need to demonstrate completion of specific and relevant qualifications and training such as the following:

  • HBO Chemical technology;
  • HBO Business Administration;
  • WO Chemical Engineering;
  • VAPRO C / D;
  • VCA-VOL (safety);
  • GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices);
  • Completion of relevant ROVC training courses.

Certain personal attributes are also important: for example to be customer-oriented, show initiative and have a scrupulous and thoughtful approach to the work. You will be expected to work well as part of a team including consideration for their safety and professional development, and be comfortable with shift work.

What salary can you expect as a Production Supervisor?

The salary for a Production Supervisor will depend on a number of factors such as the type and size of production facility, your qualifications and experience, and the seniority of the role on offer. As a guide, you can expect a salary of between €3.500 and €6.000 per month in the Netherlands.
